📰 3-Minute Read: 6 Types of People Who Wouldn’t Survive Off-Grid
To be ready for a disaster or economic collapse, off-gridders choose to prepare themselves by growing and harvesting their own crops, purifying their own water, and generating reliable alternative energy sources to their properties.
Being this level of self reliant and ready for a SHTF situation isn’t for everyone, though - here are six types of people who wouldn’t last a day living the off-grid life.
How many do you know?
The Comfort Seeker
In a world where you can have food delivered right to your doorstep in less than 30 minutes, a lot of people are addicted to convenience; most wouldn’t be willing to trade a life of comfort to be completely self-sufficient.
If you want to be prepared for any kind of situation, it’s worth training yourself to live without these modern luxuries to have half a chance at survival.
The Technology Addict
Similar to our previous point about modern comforts, individuals who can’t look away from their smartphones for more than five minutes are unlikely to be able to thrive off-grid.
These days, we’re accustomed to constant connectivity and people who are particularly addicted to their screens should think twice about living an off-grid life.
If you think this could be you, why not try and ween yourself off the phone using the parental controls on your smartphone?
Set restrictions for yourself for when you can and cannot check your social media.
The Picky Eater
For obvious reasons, picky eaters will struggle living off-grid.
With no more food deliveries at your fingertips, eating out at your favorite restaurant, or even going to the grocery store every other day, being a self-sufficient off-gridder is probably not a great choice for you if you’re not willing to live off the land.
Unfortunately it’s hard to grow your own mac and cheese or chicken nuggets. But maybe there are other foods that you can develop a passion for?
The Sloth
If you’re lazy and spend most of your time in front of the television or playing your online games, it’s definitely not a good idea to move off-grid.
Living off the grid means being very physically active doing things like gardening, harvesting crops, and doing DIY projects.
Also, there’s no such thing as instant gratification off-grid - you’ll need to work for every basic part of your life. But it’s soooo worth it!
If you like the idea of living off grid, but you know in your heart you’re a slacker or don’t enjoy spending much time outdoors, you might want to rent an off-grid Airbnb for a few weeks to get a taste of what you’re in for before committing to the lifestyle.
The Resource Waster
Extending the use of resources as much as possible and finding ways to repurpose items and minimize waste are major aspects of being an off-gridder.
Living sustainably and resourcefully is one of the main draws to this lifestyle, so people who are used to simply throwing away what they don’t want or need are definitely not suited to this way of life.
Can you still live off grid and not live sustainably? Of course you can. But if your intention is to be more self reliant or reduce your electrical costs, the lifestyle can get expensive pretty quick.
The Company Craver
Being off-grid often means living far away from civilization and the hustle and bustle of city life.
People who are afraid to be alone or who crave the company of others will likely struggle initially.
But if you can learn to enjoy spending this time on yourself, you may discover a whole new appreciation for life.
Do You Have What it Takes?
While the off-grid life offers an incomparable sense of freedom and independence, it’s not for everyone! If you’ve been thinking about going off-grid but you fall into any of these categories, it’s worth training yourself to get out of these habits otherwise you could struggle as an off-gridder; adaptability and resilience are key.
